This fish symbol represents
the people of the early church. After the death and resurrection
of Jesus Christ, the early church
fell under extreme persecution which caused people to spread throughout
the world. These followers of Christ were later nicknamed "Christians" because
of their Christ likeness in the way they lived their lives.
Archeologists have
found in their diggings, the fish and the cross symbols engraved
in the walls of small store front buildings. These businesses
were believed to be operated by Christian business men
of that day.
The symbols were
primarily understood by other Christians who may be purchasing
from that business that the owner is a
follower of Christ. This helped bring the people of likemindedness
together. |
